How Long Does Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome Last?
Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome only occurs when patients use cannabis or marijuana for a longer time period. Its symptoms do not appear at the very 1st use of cannabis or marijuana. Symptoms start appearing after prolong use of cannabis. Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome is all about the symptoms appearing as a result of the abusive use of Cannabinoid. The single episode of cannabis use may lead to vomiting and nausea, along with abdominal pain. And these symptoms may last up to 24 to 48 hours.
These symptoms may reoccur if people start taking cannabis again. The interval between the appearance of the next episode of symptoms may vary from a few days to months.
These symptoms may subside if patients stop taking marijuana or cannabis. There are three main phases of Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. Each phase remains for a specific time. The 1st phase is the prodromal phase. In this phase, the patient starts experiencing symptoms, and the symptoms are mild.
The patient feels nausea and sometimes vomiting in the morning time when he wakes up. It is also termed as morning sickness, which is usually experienced by pregnant women at the early stages of pregnancy. Sometimes patients try to get rid of these symptoms by taking more doses of marijuana or cannabis. But increased no. of doses leads to the severity of symptoms. A hot water bath is the easiest and fastest way to get rid of these symptoms. So people, instead of taking any more cannabis dose, prefer to take a hot water bath. This initial phase of symptoms may last up to months or even years.
They are moving on to the next phase, which is hyperemetic phase. In this phase, the patient experience all the symptoms of Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. These symptoms include retching, pain in the abdomen, nausea, and vomiting. The vomiting becomes severe and intense. Retching occurs more frequently i.e., up to 5 times per hour.
In this phase, the symptoms are on the peak and require emergency treatment. The patient is not in a condition to take anything like food or medication through the mouth. So it leads to sudden weight loss. Due to excessive vomiting, the water level of the body gets down. This low level of water leads to dehydration of the body. Dehydration may be horrendous and leads to severe medical conditions. Immediate IV fluids are required to inject as IV fluids contain all the essential nutrients and vitamins and electrolytes to carry out the normal functioning of the body.
People who take a shower more frequently, become addicted to it, and excess hot water bath may also lead to dehydration. Usually, patients with this phase of Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome are admitted to the emergency room of the hospital for immediate treatment.
The 3rd or final phase of Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome is the recovery phase. This phase only starts when patients stop taking marijuana or cannabis completely. This phase may last up today to months. Everything got settled when patients stop taking marijuana. The patient does not have to take a bath frequently because there are no more symptoms after quitting.
