Corynebacterium Xerosis Gram Stain, Characteristics, Morphology, Arrangement
Corynebacterium is an anaerobic bacteria and gram positive genus of bacteria. They are bacilli i.e. rod shaped but in some phases of life, they are club shaped. Due to its club shape, it is termed as corynebacterium (coryneform means club shaped). These genus of species are present in nature widely in the microbiota of animals also in human microbiota. These are innocuous and are in commensal relationship with their host. Some of them are used for the industrial purpose like C. Glutamicum. Some of its types are responsible for causing diseases like diphtheria and the causative agent is C. diptheriae. Other species of microbiota are their cuzns in general trueperella and arcanobacterium.
Collins and Cummins were the two scientists who in 1986 described the main features of corynebacterium xerosis. These are when pass through gram staining process, results in positive gram staining. These are gram positive in nature. Not only corynebacterium xerosis but the whole genus corynebacterium is gram positive. These are not spore forming bacteria. Even the catalyzation process of corynebacterium xerosis gives positive result. Some other features we're described about its shape that they are rod shaped bacilli and sometimes appear in a slight curved form.
Corynebacterium xerosis is the specie of genera corynebacterium. So the characteristics of corynebacterium are all the characteristics of corynebacterium xerosis. The corynebacterium are the rod shaped bacilli and sometimes they are a slight curved in shape. This curve does not thick ends and thin inner round (comma type shape). This genera, has a gram positive result. It is usually found in a commensal relationship with the skin of human. As it consider the skin as it's host tissues. It usually attacks the conjuctival sac of eye. It is present single or sometimes in pairs. It is present in the shape of v or y.
Talking about the morphology of corynebacterium xerosis, it has a slight curved shape. These are bacilli rods. Corynebacterium xerosis is also known as diptheriod because it has a relationship with corynebacterium diptheriae. They have complex structure of cell wall. The plasma membrane of these species are covered with another layer named peptidoglycan layer. This peptidoglycan layer is covalently bonded to a polymer named arabinogalactan. There is an outer layer of mycolic acid in these species, which is equivalent to the outer most layer of gram negative bacteria.
Talking about the arrangements in the structure of corynebacterium xerosis, it has a fence around it named Palisades. Basically this fence is made by joining bacterias together. There is a specific way of their joining. They are arranged in a Chinese manner or in the form of V palisade. It may also have arrangement of 2 and 4 palisade. It is usually found in the normal Flora of skin in human. Corynebacterium xerosis may also appear elliptical. Throughout their life cycle, they are polymorphic, which means they keep changing their shapes and structure. They may vary in length and thickness.
