Exercise intolerance Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment
Exercise intolerance is a condition in which the patient is not able to perform any further physical activity after a specific limit. The patient when try to do more physical activity after a specific time or duration he feels pain and fatigue along with some nausea and vomiting. Exercise intolerance is not a disease or an abnormal condition and also not a symptom, it is a normal physiological process every human face after excessive exercise. It can be secondary to various diseases. Exercise intolerance may occur due to dyspnea and muscular problems like muscle pain i.e. myalgia.
Exercise intolerance is a state of body which shows symptoms sometimes secondary to other respiratory diseases like dyspnea i.e. breathlessness and shortness of breath. Other symptoms involved are the myalgia i.e. pain in muscles, fast or rapid breathing i.e. tachypnea. Patient feels weakness in body, severe headache and nausea. Sometimes vomiting is also associated with exercise intolerance and patient feels dizzy along with excessive sweating. The exercise intolerance also causes muscle cramps and fatigue. All the above mentioned symptoms make the body intolerable to exercise. This mostly occurs in patients with obesity.
There may be many causes behind the exercise intolerance and most of them are the respiratory diseases. The main causes include respiratory disorders involving cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis cause the reduced pulmonary function which ultimately leads to the exercise intolerance. Bronchiectasis is also a main cause behind exercise intolerance. Chronic fatigue syndrome is also included in causes involving orthostatic intolerance and post-concussion syndrome. In post-concussion syndrome the exercise intolerance may reduce with the passage of time. Some heart conditions like cardiac failure, cardiac arrhythmia, aortic valve insufficiency, pulmonary artery hypertension and musculoskeletal disorders also cause exercise intolerance.
To check the exercise intolerance a specific exercise stress test is performed. In which the heart activity is tested against exercise. The test tells how the heart responds to the exercise duration. The patient is allowed to walk on the treadmill and leads of the electrocardiogram are placed at the chest of the patient and check the heart activity during exercise via ECG. The test is considered safe but there are also some risk associated with exercise intolerance test.
Exercise intolerance can be treated according to the main cause behind it. The main causes are related to the heart and pulmonary conditions. Medication therapy is used to treat the cause behind it and these medications may include verapamil, enalapril, angiotensin receptor antagonists and aldosterone antagonists. Other therapies to reduce the exercise intolerance are oxygen supplementation mostly prescribed in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Bronchodilators are prescribed for more oxygen supply to the lungs and reduce exercise intolerance. Heliox is also inhaled having less density than air and helps in breathing well.
