Biomedical Therapy Advantages and Disadavntages
Biomedical therapies are the change in physiological functions of body to reduce the symptoms appearing which are associated with psychological problems. There are three main biomedical therapies used
1. Drug therapies
2. Electroconvulsive treatment
3. Psychosurgery
In drug therapies, the medicines are used to treat psychological problems. The psychological drugs are further classified into 3 major groups. These three drug groups are as follows;
These drugs are used for anxiety e.g. benzodiazepines (commonly used are diazepam, alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide. Barbiturates are also used e.g. meprobamate. Hypnotics used are triazolam, flurazepam. When patients quit using anti-anxiety drugs, after some time the patient may again face anxiety.
These drugs are used to treat mental problems like epilepsy, schizophrenia etc. anti-psychotic drugs are the neuroleptics and major tranquilizers. Drugs used are Phenothiazine (thioridazine, chlorpromazine, fluphenazine) Butyrophenones (haloperidol) These kind of pharmacotherapies also show symptoms like constipation, drowsiness and dry mouth. Tardive dyskinesia is associated with the use of anti-psychotic drugs.
These drugs are used to elevate the mood and make the patient stress less. The anti-depressants eliminate the mood swings. Anti-depressants are further divided into 3 main classes these are Tricyclic (imipramine, amitriptyline). Mono amine oxidase inhibitors (phenelzine, isocarboxazid) Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (sertraline, fluoxetine, paroxetine)
Lithium therapy is used to treat bipolar mood disorders and control extreme mood swings occurring in patient. But this therapy also cause problems in kidney and thyroid gland.
In this therapy, electric waves are used to treat patient. 1st the patient is given anesthesia and then mild electric shock is applied via electrodes placing at the temporal region of brain.
It is the rarely used surgical procedure which is done to change the psychological reactions. It controls the patient’s aggressive or violent behavior via lobotomy.
The following advantages are associated with biomedical therapies used.
• It helps us understanding our own self.
• It helps to cure the problems related to routine life i.e. difficulty in eating
• Counseling play a vital role in overcoming any disease, as counseling energize the patient.
• The patient thinks positive and negativity goes away.
• It educate the patients about different problems and diseases in life.
• The patients using anti-depressants improve patient’s mood.
• The spirit of further research on these diseases is also encouraged.
• The awareness of causes make the patient to avoid diseases.
• These therapies focus more on treatment than the prevention
• The medical professionals feel proud
• These therapies ignores the social factors associated with causes.
• Biomedical therapies do not believe that health and illness are associated with each other.
• Some treatments are costly e.g. chemotherapies
• Sometimes some patients do not respond to biomedical therapies.
• Sometimes the patient do not feel satisfied and ignore the prescribed therapies and medications
• Some biomedical therapies may take long time to cure patient
• Some patients do not have believe on these biomedical therapies.
