Asteroid hyalosis is a condition in which numerous small size white opacities of calcium become suspended in the vitreous humor. Vitreous humor is the clear substance which looks like jelly present between outer front lens and inner side of eye i.e. retina. This substance fills the eye ball. Asteroid hyalosis normally occurs in patients with the age over 60 years. It is reported that men are more susceptible to asteroid hyalosis as compare to women. Asteroid hyalosis resembles with a condition known as “floaters” but these both conditions are different as in asteroid hyalosis these are calcium deposits that scatter all around vitreous humor or aside of vitreous humor. It is considered a degenerative disease of eye.
The calcium deposits in vitreous humor can move to and fro with the movement of eye ball but they come back to their original position when the eye ball relaxes. Asteroid hyalosis sometimes cause loss of vision to patient and it is not considered fatal. The patient himself can’t observe these white calcium deposits in eye but an eye doctor can clearly see them during an examination. But sometimes these calcium deposits can disturb patient in daily routine as it affect vision.
Asteroid hyalosis is unilateral at starting and usually occurs in patients with the age over 60 years. If the condition is mild then it may be asymptomatic but if the condition becomes severe then it show symptoms like blurry vision or loss of vision. Floaters may also appear sometimes. The eye looks like stars appearing at night time in the sky. Multiple white suspended particles appear in eye and sometimes these particles appear yellowish white in color. These white calcium deposits can move along with eye ball movement and after that it become relax and settled down when the movement of eye ball stops.
It is a benign condition related to eye. The causes associated with asteroid hyalosis are unknown till now but there are some causes reported according to different cases related to this condition. Diabetes mellitus can be the main cause behind asteroid hyalosis but it is not the only cause, hypertension is also considered a cause. Hypercholesterolemia, in which cholesterol level of body increases than normal, can also be the cause. Hyperopia is another cause. It is also associated with age factor, as the age increases the chances of occurrence of asteroid hyalosis also increases.
Usually the treatment for asteroid hyalosis is not required because it is a degenerative disease. The patient should visit doctor regularly for routine eye exams. The only treatment for asteroid hyalosis is the surgery known as vitrectomy. It is considered a safe procedure for treatment of asteroid hyalosis. In this technique a cutter is used to cut the gel of vitreous and a small needle is used to inject and suck out the calcium deposits inside vitreous along with vitreous. When vitreous is completely removed, it is replaced by a solution which is sterile and saline which properties are similar to vitreous humor.
